Tourmaline belongs to the complex family of aluminum borosilicates containing iron, magnesium, or other various metal impurities that determine the crystal's color. It can be red, pink, yellow, brown, black, green, blue, or violet. The name tourmaline comes from the ancient Sinhalese word turmali – a multicolored gemstone, or turamali – something small from the earth.
The most popular and best-known type of tourmaline is Schorl – a black or sometimes dark blue crystal that has been used since before the 1400s. This type of tourmaline is named after the Saxony town (in Germany), where this distinctive stone was found in nearby tin mines.
