Tourmaline belongs to the complex family of aluminum borosilicates, containing iron, magnesium, or other various metal impurities that determine the crystal's color. This mineral can be red, pink, yellow, brown, black, green, blue, or violet. The name tourmaline comes from the ancient Sinhalese word turmali (or turamali), meaning a mixed-color gemstone or something small from the earth.
The most popular and best-known type of tourmaline is Schorl – a black, or sometimes dark blue crystal, used as early as before 1400. This name comes from the Saxony city (Germany), where black tourmaline was found in nearby tin mines.
