Tourmalines belong to the complex family of aluminum borosilicates, in which various iron, magnesium, and other metal impurities determine the variety of crystal colors – it can be red, pink, yellow, brown, black, green, blue, or violet. Its name comes from the ancient Sinhalese word turmali (or turamali), meaning a mixed-color gemstone or something small from the earth.
The most popular type of tourmaline is Schorl – a black or dark blue crystal used already before the 1400s. The name “Schorl” comes from the city of Saxony (Germany), near tin mines where this distinctive stone was discovered.
