Tourmaline belongs to the complex family of aluminum borosilicates, in which iron, magnesium, or other various metal impurities determine the color of the crystal. Its color palette can range from red, pink, yellow, brown, black, green, blue to violet. The name tourmaline comes from the ancient Sinhalese word turmali – a mixed-color gemstone, or turamali – something small from the earth.
The most popular and best-known type of tourmaline is Schorl – a black or sometimes dark blue crystal that was used as early as before 1400. The name comes from the city of Saxony (Germany), near tin mines where black tourmaline was found.
