Tourmalines belong to a complex family of aluminum borosilicates containing iron, magnesium, or other metal impurities that determine the crystal's color. This mineral can be red, pink, yellow, brown, black, green, blue, or violet. Its name comes from the ancient Sinhalese word turmali (or turamali), meaning a mixed-color gemstone or something small from the earth.
The most popular and best-known type of tourmaline is Schorl – a black or sometimes dark blue crystal used as early as 1400. The name comes from the Saxony town where black tourmaline was found in nearby tin mines.
